How to revamp a website
For today’s site, we’re going to take a hypothetical boring and mundane web-site and make it oh-so-much-better.
Let us assume that we are re-designing for Red Diesel Liverpool . Now, maybe we were a bit harsh before; although this isn’t breaking any new ground and the site gets great traffic, it could really do with an update. We begin with the colours and the layout. These are always the things to begin with, as the text will have to be revamped to fit these very important aesthetics.
Now, presently the About Us page is hidden right at the bottom of the page and written in very small, not particularly inviting writing (the kind usually reserved for legal regulations or a Copyright message). You can only find it by accident, and even then you are unlikely to click on it and see what the company is all about. You’re far more likely to click away. So we re-design the menu and add the About Us page to this. Immediately this is a much more accessible site that looks better and works really well. Suddenly the whole thing is starting to take shape and look a lot more pleasing to the eye...
We begin by injecting some colour into it by making the site mint green with bold white writing
Now we tackle the graphics and colours. At present the site is very gray. It looks highly professional, but more akin to what you would expect when looking for a lawyer or solicitor. This needs rectifying. We begin by injecting some colour into it by making the site mint green with bold white writing that isn’t childish but does have a more fun-appeal.
Now we add a logo to the top right. This logo is what the company uses on letterheads and is a beaver; it’s a great design and there is absolutely no reason to change it. By now we are really getting somewhere. The site looks great and is far more functional, which is just what we set out to do!
The result of this kind of re-design? It’s usually more traffic and better sales. That isn’t always the case, of course, but it very often is.
Ah, one last thing I forgot to mention was we made the email address and phone number prominent on the site. It’s at the top under the log, and cannot be missed. By doing this you seem much more approachable, which is a fine thing for any company, no matter how long they have been going and where they are headed.
