Resource Linking

Link building has become increasingly important to SEO in the past three years. As more and more web masters have become savvy to Google and other search engines, Google simply adapt the way they rank sites. A lot of spam sites used to achieve 1st page rankings on Google but since the introduction of the Panda algorithm earlier this year, spam rankings have virtually disappeared. Google now places increased importance on relevant and original content over replication. As such having trusted links on a web site is now essential to a site’s success.

Link building has become so intertwined with SEO that even Wikipedia now has a separate listing for the subject. Whilst it gives a basic overview of what link building is it doesn’t go into too many details about the subject. There are a number of different ways to link build but the most effective and most important way is resource linking. Resource linking is simply a method of building links into a website that link to an external website deemed to be relevant to the content of the original website. For example; Jill’s website is all about computer games. She decides to place links to other websites that contain relevant content related to computer games. As a result when Google comes to view Jill’s website, it will see that Jill has linked into an authority website that is trusted and relevant to the subject of computer games. Google will view Jill’s website as being relevant and trusted and rank it higher on the search results for Jill’s keyword terms – probably ‘computer games’.

The important thing to remember when doing resource link building is not to link into sites that only have a vague relevance to the content on your own. For example, although the BBC is a trusted and highly ranked website on Google, it is no use to link into the homepage just because of this. The homepage will have no direct relevance to your site unless your site is affiliated with the BBC. However if say your website is a mobile phone or internet company and you found a news article on the BBC relevant to mobile phones or the internet, then it may be worth linking into that article. When Google views your site it will see the link to the BBC, but also see that it points to a specific article with relevant content to your site.

Another way to ensure your links and SEO are correct and relevant is to make sure some of the content relevant to your site is written into the site’s URL. There are many ways of how this can be done well. For example http://www.abroadband.com/en/GB/whatisabroadband is a site for a well known and trusted internet service provider that specialises in roaming services. If a customer wants to know what their site is all about they can enter the search term on Google. Now because abroadband have the relevant content on their overview URL ‘whatisabroadband'that page is instantly recognisable by the search engines.

For successful link building, the key things to remember are ‘relevancy of content'and ‘authority of the sites you link into’. Remember these things first and it should make your job a lot easier.
